West Yorkshire’s new schools boss in academy call

The Yorkshire Post is reporting that West Yorkshire’s new schools commissioners has urged good and outstanding primaries and secondaries in the county to join or set up their own multi academy trusts ‘to help raise standards beyond their own school’…

Paul Smith is one of eight regional school commissioners (RSCs) who have been appointed to oversee local decision-making over both the opening and monitoring of academies and free schools. Under the new system, Yorkshire has been split into three regions. Mr Smith is responsible for a “region” which covers both Lancashire and West Yorkshire.

He told The Yorkshire Post that he wanted to ensure all academies in the county were good or better, and that he has had held talks with local councils about how more strong performing academy sponsors could be brought in to or found from within West Yorkshire. Mr Smith said the creation of an area which combined Lancashire and Yorkshire could benefit schools on both sides of the Pennines…

He called for more strong performing schools to be involved in multi academy trusts – organisations which sponsor more than one school – in West Yorkshire. He said: “My message would be that if you are a stand alone academy which is good or outstanding then you should look to join an existing multi academy trust (MAT) or set up your own trust to take forward what you have done very successfully to other schools.”…

    It appears that this Regional Commissioner is focused on destroying what is left of the local authorities in order to increase the number of multi-academy trusts. Schools should beware of joining these – they’ll find they have less freedom within a MAT than they had when they were LA maintained.  Even stand-alone academies should resist.

    These appear to be the characteristics of MATs:

    1  Taxpayers’ money is thrown at them to get them set up.
    2  They have an ‘executive principal’ who doesn’t do much actual teaching, if any.
    3  The executive principal will be highly paid.  S/he may even be awarded with a gong for ‘services to education’ if s/he’s on the right side of the SoS.
    4  There’s the potential for academy trustees to bung contracts to companies linked to trustees and their relatives.
    5  The MAT’s head office is likely to expect its academies to do what they’re told: use a particular curriculum, maybe, teach in a certain way or use particular materials or resources.
    6  They will have glossy websites.

    This is very worrying and increases the suspicion about the role of these people which is to persuade (bully) schools into the next stage of the grand plan which is to remove education from local democracy and place it in the hands of effectively private companies … what will Stage 2 becomes – sounds like for profit by the front door rather than all the back door options.

    We have already had some MATs being identified with problems e-ACT, CfBT etc…
