Today’s poll: Would compulsory work experience for all school children be a good idea?

Nine out of 10 employers apparently think school leavers are not ready for employment and three-quarters put the situation down to a lack of work experience. If enough placements could be made available, would compulsory work experience for all school children be something you would welcome?

SchoolsImprove Have broader competencies in school: collaboration, problem solving, communication, creativity not enforced WorkExperience

SchoolsImprove – Not really. It is very hard to find effective placements that give young people the chance to take on real tasks.

SchoolsImprove better to give teachers regular external work experience and embed #employability skills & #enterprise into curriculum

In theory it is a good idea.  In practice, placements more often than not mind numbingly boring with no real tasks, and usually succeeds in turning kids off that sector.  Half day/single day work shadowing would probably work better.  As long as business is prepared to put some effort into the actual structure of the w/exp.

SchoolsImprove Too often the crucial aspects of wex are overlooked – support to prepare for wex and reflection to identify learning from it

SchoolsImprove Work experience is crucial to develop, reinforce and clarify societal expectations for young people whilst developing self.

SchoolsImprove the support of the local companies/businesses is crucial though. Education of the future is everyone’s responsibility!
