Teacher hit pupil over beard taunts

A teacher hit a pupil who poked fun at the beard he was growing for charity, a disciplinary tribunal has been told . This is from the Telegraph…

Elgan Wyn Jones “went ballistic” when the boy, 14, held up a crude cartoon of him and said: “This is you sir!”

Mr Jones, 59, hit the unruly pupil on the back with such force that the rest of the class heard the “slapping sound”.

Art and design teacher Mr Jones grew the moustache and beard for the Movember and Decembeard campaigns to raise awareness of testicular and bowel cancer.

The disciplinary hearing was told Mr Jones sent the boy out of the class to control his behaviour but allowed him back after telling him to “calm down”.

Presenter Gwenno Hughes-Marshall told the disciplinary hearing: “Later in the lesson the boy held up a cartoon drawing and said: “This is you sir”.

“Statements from a sample of the class of 25 described Mr Jones’s reaction as ballistic.

“At that point he ordered him to leave the classroom and hit him on the back.

“It was hard enough to make a slapping sound heard by his classmates.”

Mr Jones was working as a supply teacher at Preseli Comprehensive School in Crymych, Pembrokeshire, where he was a former head of art and design.

The boy, who has attention deficit disorder, said in a statement “He said I was a bloody waste of space and that I had no brain and I was stupid.”

Mr Jones denied hitting the boy when he gave evidence at the General Teaching Council for Wales hearing in Cardiff.
