Headteachers have called on ministers to fight the rising tide of infections in schools by introducing mandatory self-isolation for siblings of children who test positive.

More than a quarter of schools in England have already had enough children and staff off sick with Covid-19 to meet official thresholds for imposing extra coronavirus measures.
