Primary school headteacher sacked in exam cheating row

The Birmingham Mail is reporting that a primary school headteacher has been sacked after claims that pupils’ maths test answers were changed after their exam had finished…

Mental maths SATs results for 11-year-olds were annulled at high-flying St Patrick’s CE Primary Academy at Earlswood, Solihull, following a probe into the 2014 test.

The annulment is understood to have meant that none of the Year 6 pupils – numbering around 30 – received a maths grade before they joined their secondary schools last September.

St Patrick’s confirmed that former head Stephanie O’Grady had been sacked because of the incident.

Chair of governors Gemma Gathercole said: “Appropriate disciplinary measures were implemented and parents were kept fully informed throughout the process.

“We have reviewed and strengthened our procedures for test administration and are confident they are now more robust…

The exact details of the answer-change allegations last night remained unclear but Mrs O’Grady was replaced by acting head Caroline Glennon for the start of the 2014/15 academic year…

Good for the school if they did keep parents informed along the way, although it seems we still don’t actually know what happened.

It’s very disappointing for a career to be, presumably, ruined in this way, but surely it is the right outcome: cheating is completely unfair on schools and students who do things honestly.

    SchoolsImprove I was a school where they used to pause the tape for the mental maths. Probably changed the answers as well.
