Parent whose son missed school attacked truancy officer with candlestick in bloody attack

The Mirror is reporting that a mum-of-two who viciously attacked a truancy officer during a visit about her son’s absence from school has narrowly avoided a prison sentence…

Violent Rachel Lane, 38, pounced on Michelle Hopkins after she went to her home with a social worker to discuss her son’s attendance record. She dragged her to the ground by her hair before repeatedly punching her face and head.

Terrified Ms Hopkins tried to escape, but Lane smashed her over the head with a glass candle holder several times, leaving her with blood pouring from her wounds.

The attendance officer told Bristol Crown Court she feared for her life during the attack, and is having counselling to help her return to work.

Lane pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was handed a 12-month prison sentence suspended for a year.

Recorder Richard Mawhinney said she was only spared immediate custody because she is the carer to her terminally-ill daughter, 20.

He said: “Were it not for the impact on your daughter you would go straight to prison.”

The court heard Ms Hopkins went to Lane’s home in Hartcliffe, Bristol, with social worker Debbie Rogers in June because her son had been missing school…

Alex Daymond, defending, said his client regretted the attack and the attack was an ‘outpouring of pressure, frustration and anger’.

He urged the court not to jail her because she was the sole-carer of her ill daughter and added: “Comments were misinterpreted. She has not been in trouble for a very long time…

Lane pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was told to pay £500 compensation and an £100 victim surcharge, and was given a six-month curfew between 8pm to 6am.

That’s really horrendous and while the judge has suspended the prison sentence because of Lane’s terminally ill daughter, it does make you question if someone capable of this should be at liberty…

SchoolsImprove If she’s a single mum perhaps she needs support in caring for her daughter, some kind of a break. Not condoning her ~
