Ofsted tells Weston-super-Mare independent school it needs to improve

The Weston Mercury is reporting that an independent school which charges pupils up to £1,990 per term has been told it requires improvement by education watchdog Ofsted.

Ashbrooke House School, in Ellenborough Park North, was visited by inspectors in February.

In their report, published on Tuesday, inspectors said pupils were not making consistently good progress, and teachers were not ‘held to account’ over their quality of teaching by the school’s proprietors.

They said the quality of teaching, learning and management all require improvement.

The school’s early years provision and pupils’ behaviour was rated ‘good’, but the school’s overall effectiveness was also classed as requiring improvement.

Inspectors were critical of how the headteacher and deputy headteacher taught their own classes while also leading the school.

The report said: “They do not manage the demands on their time in order to bring about school improvement.”

In a letter to parents, proprietor John Teasdale, who was also once the school’s headteacher for nine years, hit out at the findings and criticised inspectors.

He said: “I am bitterly disappointed with the outcome of this inspection and the cavalier way in which many judgements have been made without the gathering of proper evidence.”

Mr Teasdale, who has been the proprietor for 23 years, said the lead inspector was ‘prejudiced’ against the fact Ashbrooke is an independent school.

He said: “This comes through in many of the very unsound judgements.”

What on earth has it got to do with OFSTED? I am sure the parents will vote with their feet if they are not satisfied.
