The Mail is reporting that the married head of religious studies at a top public school who had a two-month affair with a sixth former has been banned from the classroom for life.
John Boothby, 27, befriended the girl after she ‘confided’ in him and their ‘sexual relationship’ developed after they first kissed.
He has now been banned from teaching after being found guilty of professional misconduct and bringing the profession into disrepute.
The National College for Teaching and Leadership heard his behaviour ‘had the potential to result in harm to [the pupil]’ – who was over the age of 18 at the time of their affair.
Boothby was the highly regarded head of religious studies and philosophy at £32,000-a-year Canford School in Wimborne, Dorset.
The girl involved told police in July 2014: ‘It started about two months ago; it was consensual and not forced.’
She said that eventually ‘a sexual relationship did develop but not that rapidly.’
The girl said she ‘ended up in a B&B’ with Boothby during half-term where he told her he loved her. She said: ‘I told him I loved him a week later.’
The girl went on: ‘I had confided in him as part of his teaching role. I don’t really know how a friendship developed.’
She said that, after they kissed, ‘we talked about what had happened. We knew we shouldn’t be doing it, knew the risks. You know teacher/pupil.’
The panel said this showed Boothby was aware of his special position as her teacher but nevertheless ‘actively decided to pursue the relationship with her’…
