Lib Dems would replace Ofsted because its brand is ‘completely broken’

Ofsted needs to be replaced and not reformed because the inspection body’s brand is “completely broken”, the Liberal Democrats education spokesperson has told i.

The Lib Dem manifesto includes a pledge to reform school league tables and “replace Ofsted with a new HM Inspector of Schools”.

Speaking to i, Ms Moran said: “The Ofsted brand in the profession is completely broken.

“It’s one of the top reasons teachers give for increased workloads… they don’t feel that Ofsted looks at a school or what they do holistically.”

Asked whether it would be better to change how Ofsted works rather than abolishing it, Ms Moran said: “There is an argument for saying ‘well why don’t you just reform Ofsted?’.

“But whenever that’s happened, there’s so many institutional ways that Ofsted does things, we think it would be better to start from scratch.”
