‘Learning lessons’ review announced on first anniversary of murder of Leeds school teacher Ann Maguire

The Yorkshire Evening Post is reporting that a review is being launched to investigate whether lessons can be learned from the murder of school teacher Ann Maguire – exactly a year after her death…

Mrs Maguire, 61, was fatally stabbed by 15-year-old Will Cornick as she taught Spanish at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds on April 28, 2014.

Following the criminal case, which saw Cornick locked up for a minimum of 20 years in November, the Leeds Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) has said it will examine events in the school before and after the incident.

It will also look at the emergency services’ response.

Independent chair Jane Held said the legal grounds for a serious case review – a legal requirement when a child dies or suffers serious harm in suspicious circumstances – had not been met.

But she said: “I have decided it is appropriate to undertake a two-stage learning lessons review to establish any learning from how professionals worked together to safeguard the children at the school and promote their welfare immediately prior to and following the incident.”

“We will also review how all the local emergency agencies worked together in response to the incident.

“An independent reviewer will undertake this work, with a view to the report being published later this year…”

It feels odd that it was only a year ago that this awful killing of Ann Maguire happened and it is surely important that the incident is not forgotten.

In particular, there certainly seemed to be some difficult questions unanswered in the case so let’s hope this review can get to the bottom of them.
