Head struck off after racial abuse of staff

The Telegraph is reporting that a headmistress has been sacked and struck off after she was found to have racially abused staff…

The high-flying career of Anupe Hanch, 49, is in tatters today after she was found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct.

Ambitious Ms Hanch was head of Gearies Junior School, Gants Hill, Ilford, Essex, for seven years.

But she has been totally disgraced after a National College for Teaching and Leadership panel spent two weeks hearing hard-hitting evidence from outraged witnesses.

A report published after the inquiry said Ms Hanch made racist remarks over Muslim colleagues taking the religious holiday of Eid off in September 2010…

She also insulted a Polish colleague and said she would like to “chop off” the head of another colleague and “see her walking around headless”, the hearing was told.

When reviewing CVs for a job, Ms Hanch said: “If we have any more Muslims in here it’s going to start looking like Al Jazeera”, according to the report…

  1. Gearies Junior School no longer exists.  It was amalgamated with Gearies Infant School in September 2013.  Mr R Drew is the head.  It was  judged Outstanding on all four headings in 2014.

Ms Hanch was former head of the Junior School when it was separately inspected in December 2010 (Good).

It’s unclear when she was suspended but the LA said it was immediately after it received complaints.   Gearies is an LA maintained school, not an academy.

Compare this immediate action with that of Cuckoo Hall Academies Trust (CHAT).  This small trust was given a Financial Notice to Improve before Christmas.  The Education Funding Agency said it had received allegations of bullying but it was up to the Trust to investigate.  This effectively means the Trust will investigate itself.  Allegations of bullying continue.

  2. Factoid

When will people stop conflating race with religion? Islam is a religion – not a race. Anyone of any race may become a Muslim.  The offence may therefore have been religious intolerance, but not racism.
