Guest Post: Google and Parent Zone’s Free Internet Safety programme for UK Primary Schools

Google and the family internet safety experts at Parent Zone are celebrating the second year of Be Internet Legends, helping Key Stage 2 primary school students to be safe and confident explorers of the online world.

Be Internet Legends is a free educational initiative which helps teachers empower their pupils to navigate the online world safely. It’s wide-ranging and multi-faceted, consisting of PSHE Association-accredited lesson plans and teaching resources, an interactive online game – Interland – and family activities to help engage parents.

To support classroom activity, the Be Internet Legends programme also runs a free assembly tour, as well as expert-led teacher training workshops which are free to attend for UK based primary school teachers.

What does Be Internet Legends cover?

As well as crucial internet safety messages like the importance of setting secure passwords and keeping personal information private, the programme also includes softer behavioural skills to promote kindness online and encourage children to seek help when they need it.

Each theme in Be Internet Legends, referred to as ‘pillars’, covers a set of skills to help children understand how to better protect themselves against difficulties they may encounter online.

The lesson plans include support sheets and differentiation activities to suit every child’s ability and age. They are designed for teachers to select in response to particular topics they wish to cover with their class – even if they don’t have time to complete the full scheme of work over the course of a term or a year.

Be Internet Legends also includes engaging family activities to continue the learning at home and involve parents in this important topic.

Assemblies and Teacher Training Workshops

During 2019, the Legends team are especially keen to visit areas with the greatest need. Please get in touch by emailing if you feel your school community would benefit from having our support.

Whilst assembly numbers are limited, the family and teaching resources are available for any KS2 teacher who would like to request them. You can do that by completing this online form.

If you would like to learn more about using the curriculum, the Teacher Training workshops are a great opportunity for teachers and professionals to do just that. Each session will allow teachers to share ideas for embedding the Be Internet Legends scheme of work in the classroom, as well as hearing the latest on internet safety and digital resilience.

Running in cities across the UK from London to Edinburgh, places will be available on a first come, first served basis.

You can find out more on the Parent Zone website, as well as lots more information about the programme.

Alternatively, feel free to contact the team by emailing
