The Telegraph is reporting that the Dean of York is facing a revolt from pupils and staff of a leading prep school after suspending three senior teachers when three unsecured air rifles were found on school premises.
The head teacher of York’s Minster School, Alex Donaldson, and two other members of the school’s senior management team were frog marched out of the building on Friday before shocked pupils.
A school governor has also been asked to step down, the Telegraph understands. The Minster Police, the private police force in charge of security within the cathedral precinct, had found the three air rifles locked in a lavatory behind an unused office.
The Dean of York, the Very Rev Dr Vivienne Faull, wrote to all parents informing them of the incident and stating that a full investigation was underway.
But shocked parents have expressed outrage at the way the matter has been handled, suggesting that that officers had been tipped off and had gone looking for the rifles.
They criticised the “heavy handed” manner with which the hugely popular members of staff had been treated.
One parent, who did not wish to be identified, said the air rifles were used for school camps and that written permission was sought from all parents before the children were allowed to use them.
“It appears that they were being looked for. They were in a secure space and you would need a key to get in.”
