More children get chosen primary school

Despite reports elsewhere in the media than about 10% of children have failed to get their preferred primary, the Guardian is claiming this is better than last year, at least in London and some other major local authorities. This is from the Guardian…

More parents in London and other major local authorities in England have been given their first choice in primary schools this year, despite warnings that the recent mini-boom in the birthrate would lead to increased competition for places. (more…)

 

‘Space school’ set to open next year

The Oxford Times is reporting that the country’s first ‘space school’ – to be run on an academy site in Banbury and with links to the National Space Centre and the National Space Academy – is due to open next year…

Pupils are preparing to ‘boldly go’ when the country’s first ‘space school’ opens in Oxfordshire next year.

The final frontier will be high on the syllabus for the 14- to 18-year-olds lucky enough to earn a place at the ground-breaking new education centre in Banbury.

Schools revive ‘touchy-feely’ values-based approach

The Guardian reports a growing number of schools are seeing the benefits of adopting ‘values-based’ learning in a fightback against the current competitive culture in education.

The pupils file in quietly class by class, the school hall lit from the front with five candles on a table. Soft music plays in the background and images of the pupils taken at various times of the year appear as a slideshow. It is the last assembly of the academic year at Tower Hill primary in Witney, Oxfordshire, and an opportunity for staff and children to reflect on the last 12 months. (more…)

 

Row over Oxford schools reading improvement scheme spending

The BBC reports that an education boss has criticised Oxford City Council’s plans for a new reading scheme to improve basic learning in schools.

Melinda Tilley, Oxfordshire County Council cabinet member for education, said the city council’s proposals should be co-ordinated with their own. (more…)

 

Oxford school specialising in children with behavioural problems receives third outstanding rating

The Oxford Times reports that a school which cares for children with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties has been rated outstanding for a third time.

And for the first time Northern House School, in South Parade, Summertown, received Ofsted inspectors top judgement for behaviour. (more…)

 

Oxfordshire primary school is failing pupils, says Ofsted

The Oxford Times is reporting that an Oxfordshire primary school has been plunged into special measures. Berinsfield Primary School was criticised for low attainment levels in English and maths which go back five years.

The school, which has 283 pupils, failed to meet Government targets last year and has already been told it is likely to be forced to become a sponsored academy to drive up standards. (more…)

 

Henley school retains ‘good’ rating

The Henley Standard is reporting that Gillotts School in Henley has been rated “good” by education watchdog Ofsted.

Inspectors who visited last month said that teaching and learning at the secondary school was good overall but there was room for improvement. (more…)

 

Oxfordshire schools ‘must lead efforts to boost reading’

Schools will need to “own” the campaign to drive up reading standards in Oxfordshire schools if it is to be a success, reports the Oxford Mail. That is according to Oxfordshire County Council’s children’s services scrutiny committee, which yesterday discussed the council’s new education strategy, including an ambitious campaign to raise reading standards among the county’s youngest children.

Oxfordshire school networks join forces to improve standards

The Oxford Mail reports details of proposed ‘aspiration networks’ where groups of high-performing and lower-performing schools will collaborate to raise standards….

OXFORDSHIRE County Council’s children’s services scrutiny committee meeting yesterday also heard the first details of proposed aspiration networks – groups of high-performing and lower-performing schools which will collaborate to focus on common goals. (more…)
