Can you succeed if you go to a comprehensive school?

Published on February 2, 2013,

So much for social mobility: 80 per cent of Britain’s leaders went to an elite school. So, is an inspirational education still the preserve of the privileged few? Janice Turner, who attended her local comp, investigates. Her conclusions? Well, she is sending her own son to a private school and believes she is buying privilege by doing so. Here are some extracts from the article in the Times…

I was listening to a radio profile of the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, recently, which featured an interview with his best friend at Oxford. As they graduated, Hunt had sent him a warm note that signed off, “See you at Westminster.” (more…)

School sports policy launch delayed by dispute between Gove and Hunt

Published on December 21, 2012,

The unveiling of a £100m government school sport policy designed to combat criticism over the Olympic legacy has been delayed due to a dispute between the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, and the education secretary, Michael Gove. This is from the Guardian…

The standoff between the Health and Education departments over a replacement for the £162m school sport partnerships controversially axed by Gove in 2010 has caused them to miss a pre-Christmas deadline to announce the new scheme. (more…)

Report suggests ministers’ insistence on competitive sports will alienate inactive schoolchildren

Published on October 2, 2012,

Ministers’ insistence on competitive team sports will alienate schoolchildren instead of tackling their sedentary lifestyles, warns a report that was launched by Boris Johnson and Mo Farah. Frisbees, cheerleading and Zumba dancing should instead be used to engage young people in physical activity who are turned off by traditional school sports, the Young Foundation thinktank argues. But the government’s strategy for encouraging young people to be active is misguided, it says. (more…)

State schools ‘letting down’ Olympians of the future

Published on August 7, 2012,

The Telegraph reports Lord Coe saying that state schools must do more to provide pupils with the chance to take part in sport and to encourage teachers to coach young athletes outside the timetable.

Without a significant improvement, the “once in a lifetime opportunity” presented by the London Olympics would be missed, said the chairman of the Games organising committee. (more…)

School playing fields: 21 sell-offs have been approved by coalition

Published on August 7, 2012,

The Guardian reports that education secretary, Michael Gove, has approved of the disposal of more than 20 school playing fields since the coalition came to power two years ago, despite a pledge to protect sports pitches from development.

Figures released by the Department for Education show that the sale of school sports fields continues even though ministers declared in the coalition agreement they would “seek to protect school playing fields”. (more…)
