London state schools best in England according to Financial Times analysis

The FT has undertaken an analysis of GSCE performance and concluded that London state schools have completed a ‘startling turnround’ and are now the best in England with children in some of the poorest areas of the capital outperforming those in many of the country’s most affluent boroughs.

The FT analysed pupils’ GCSE performance in English, mathematics and their three best other subjects over the past six years and concluded that, on this measure and without any adjustments, in 2006 London was the fourth-placed region out of nine. By last year, 2011, it was clearly in first place. (more…)

 

Fury as A-Level and GCSE examiners told to ‘fix’ results

Many papers this morning report that teachers fear talented children will be held back by plans to limit the number of pupils able to get a top A-Level or GCSE grade. The system, known as ‘comparable outcomes’, means examiners can change marking boundaries to ensure the same number of pupils get the top grades every year. Head’s plan for further school improvements in Bracknell

The Bracknell news reports that the headteacher of a secondary school that has maintained its ‘satisfactory’ rating from Ofsted says he is “looking forward to the challenge of further improving the school”.

Paul Salter, head of the Brakenhale School, in Easthampstead, said a new School Improvement Plan would be launched in September to ensure teaching and learning was consistently good across the curriculum. (more…)
