Michael Rosen: Dear Mr Gove – why do you want more children, teachers and schools to fail?

Published on February 5, 2013,

In his latest ‘letter from a curious parent’, Michael Rosen asks Michael Gove: why do you want more children, teachers and schools to fail? This is from the Guardian…

I want to start this letter by trying to be understanding. I am making every effort to empathise with your situation. I can see that you’re in a government that has made an assessment of what’s wrong with the British economy and what needs to be done about it. Correct me if I’m wrong, but your colleagues must have told you that this country will go to the dogs unless poor people are poorer and rich people are richer. No doubt they put it in terms of “keeping labour costs down in order to stay competitive” or “providing incentives to entrepreneurs”, but that’s just the kind of euphemism you with your love of clear English must despise, so let’s not use that kind of phraseology. ‘Failing’ schools get to wipe the slate clean if they reopen as an academy

Published on November 13, 2012,

‘Failing’ schools get a clean bill of health by converting to academy status because they are automatically taken out of the failing category once they reopen as an academy because the DfE is classing all such schools as “new school”. This is from the Guardian…

Schools that are adjudged to be “failing” by Ofsted are automatically being taken out of that category if they close and reopen as an academy, Education Guardian has learned. Ofsted and the Department for Education are classing all such schools as “new schools” even though they are likely to reopen with most of the same staff, on the same site and with the same pupils and parents. Ofsted documents show, however, that any such school would still face a monitoring visit within two terms. (more…)

Guest post: From failure to success – my schools improvement story by Terence Ayers

Published on July 23, 2012,

Let me preface what follows by saying that the success of the school is a testament of the skill and dedication of others, past and present; for my self I have been on a twenty year journey, sometimes bumpy, but enjoyable and rewarding.

It was in the early 1990s that I was appointed Chair of Governors of a small inner city Primary School with an uncertain future – the word was that ‘School Closed’ notices were at the printers. However I was fortunate that at the same time we appointed a new head teacher. As with any new appointment there was a difficult period of jockeying of positions until we both agreed our goals were the same. Once our respective positions were understood it gave us a platform to make changes. (more…)
