More children get chosen primary school

Despite reports elsewhere in the media than about 10% of children have failed to get their preferred primary, the Guardian is claiming this is better than last year, at least in London and some other major local authorities. This is from the Guardian…

School caretaker earns £50,000 a year – double the pay of a newly qualified teacher

The Daily Mail is upset about teachers’ pay (well, sort of) in a report about a primary school caretaker who is being paid £50,000 a year in Essex. This is from the Daily Mail… 

The worker, identified as Mr Wootton, at Ravenscroft School in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, received a basic package worth £38,000 which was topped up with an extra £14,500 for overtime and groundsman duties.

School bans triangle shaped flapjacks for health and safety

School dinner staff have been banned from serving triangular flapjacks at an Essex school after one was thrown and hurt a pupil. This is from the BBC…

Essex ‘Shed City’ school getting £8.5m

Failing Basildon primary schools told ‘become academies’

The Brentwood Weekly News is reporting that a number of failing primary schools across Basildon have been told by the director of education at Essex County Council to become sponsored academies in a bid to improve standards.

Tim Coulson, the director of education at Essex County Council, issued the ultimatum during a crunch meeting with primary schools. (more…)
