Parents and school campaigners seek judicial review over academy decision

The BBC is reporting that campaigners have sought a judicial review over the Department for Education’s decision to convert a north London primary school into an academy.

Parents of pupils of Downhills Primary School in Tottenham lodged the papers in the High Court following the decision to convert it by September. (more…)

 

Proposal unveiled for new school in Beverley as part of residential development

The Beverley Guardian is reporting that residents and businesses in Beverley are being urged to join a debate on an ambitious but ground-breaking project that, it says, could greatly enhance education for youngsters in Beverley for generations to come. The scheme would see a new school built and handed over to the local authority in return for property development on land near the school.

 

Setting up a free school: why applying was ‘utterly horrendous’

Writing in the Guardian, parent Toby Blume describes his mixed feelings about being part of a group setting up a new free school in East Finchley – the Archer academy.

Just before Christmas last year, I joined a small group of other parents for our weekly meeting of the “local schools for local children” group we’d started a few months earlier. It had started off as a parent campaign to improve the provision of secondary education and offer more choice in and around the East Finchley area of London, where we live. Discussions with the local authority had shown them to be sympathetic, but their hands were tied when it came to creating the type of provision we sought – these days it has to be a free school, or nothing. School improvement programme creates tension over uniform reintroduction in Totnes

Education experts divided on 45-hour school week school improvement plan

Norwich Evening News 24 reports on disagreements at a Great Yarmouth primary school which is proposing a radical new school timetable – including a school day scheduled to end at 6pm for pupils aged 9 to 11 – as part of a move to academy status.
