Stephen Twigg says collapsed free school projects ‘wasted at least £2.3m’

Education Secretary Michael Gove has been asked to come clean on how much money has been spent on collapsed free schools projects in England. Shadow Education Secretary Stephen Twigg says at least £2.3m was spent on three projects alone, two of which were abandoned and one which has 68 pupils. He claims the Department for Education is yet to give details on a further three projects which have foundered. A DfE spokesman said the figures were exaggerated. This is from the BBC…

One in a Million free schools funding cut “throws parents’ dreams into doubt”

News that the DfE has pulled the plug on the One in a Million school in Bradford is a blow to others planning such ventures. Toby Blume, who himself is trying to set up a new free school, writes about his reaction to the news in the Guardian…

As someone trying to set up a new free school, I can understand how angry parents must be who wanted their children to attend the One in a Million school in Bradford, which has had its funding pulled by the Department for Education (DfE) weeks before opening. In June, the DfE assured the charity running the free school that everything was on track for the funding agreement to be signed off. If this is true then some very serious questions need to be asked at DfE and someone needs to take responsibility. It’s not enough for the DfE to thank One in a Million for its hard work and to express hope that the school will open next year. (more…)
